It was originally intended to be a brief text, but as time went on, it seemed to almost take on a life of its own. The first significant research was conducted between 1994 and 1996 as part of a two-year fellowship at the Australian National University’s Research School of the Social Sciences. My appreciation goes out to the Research School, in particular Barry Hindess, who oversaw the politics division at the time. Barry’s viewpoint will undoubtedly be very different from mine. Yet, his independent critical thinking and open, friendly support were excellent catalysts for my initial observations on the entire matter.
