When I was asked to write a foreword for this third printing of Dr. Margaret Hall’s book, The Bowen Family Theory and Its Uses, which was first published in 1981, I was delighted to do it. The publishers asked that, in addition to making some comments about Dr. Hall and her book, I discuss some of the developments in Bowen theory during the past decade. I first met Margaret Hall around 1970 at Georgetown University, where she was a sociology professor and I was, at that time, a psychiatric resident. Dr. Murray Bowen had been in Georgetown’s Department of Psychiatry about ten years at that point, so his family program was well established.
