Several years ago, while I was an assistant editor of the British Journal of Psychiatry, I thought that it would be a good idea for the journal to publish a series of articles about psychotherapy which would be clinically relevant but also evidence-based. These articles are now published together in this volume,
supplemented by additional articles on topics which would not otherwise have been covered. The book has been a long time in its gestation, and the perceived importance of basing clinical practice in evidence has increased greatly during that time. So much so that, for the moment, possible drawbacks of the evidencebased approach as it applies to psychotherapy are discussed by psychotherapists among themselves, but there is still a reticence to sharing these misgivings with other practitioners.
